In fact, since 1989, there was no general census in Albania where citizens could freely declare their nationality. Among the minorities living in Albania to replace the Greeks, the association was founded in 1991 in the organization Omonia, residing mainly in the southern part of the country, Macedonians grouped in 4 Societies: MIR, Gora, Med and Prespa, represented by a political party-Macedonian Party for European Integration of Albania. Macedonians live in southern and eastern regions of Albania Mala Prespa and Golo Brdo and major cities Elbasan and Tirana. In addition, Albania live in a number of Wołochów, Roma and Czarnogórców.

Population of Albania declined after the 1998 year by more than a quarter million as a result of emigration to Italy and Greece. Natural increase once the highest in Europe (for the period 1960-1985 within the limits of 2,5-3%) stopniał to 0.8% in 2003. According to official data almost single-ethnic country: 95% Albanians, the other is mostly Greeks – 3% and Macedonians, living outside the country to nearly 2 million people, of whom 1.3 million in Kosovo, more than 200 thousand. Greece and over 170 thousand. in Italy.
